I actually only met Rick on a few occasions after I started at the Program as an Intern as he had already left the Program but would stop by for visits once in awhile.  He was always very full of life, enthusiasm and dreams.

He kept up with me by phone calls and emails.  He never was able to make it back for any of our reunions or celebrations but always sent good wishes from Hawaii.  Traveling was not something he could do.  He was very grieved when Dean Neal Gault died.

He always gave me encouragement and good wishes on the success of the Program.  It was something he was always passionate about.

I had an opportunity to speak with him shortly before he died in the hospital.  His voice was hardly audible but he seemed very lucid.  I was able to tell him how much he was appreciated and loved and how greatful I was for all of his support.

My memories of Richard Allen Chilgren begin in the fall of 1958, at St Olaf College in Northfield Minnesota.  I was a freshman just entering and making my way through the registration line.  Rick was a senior, working with administration to register us.  I remember an impish grin and some silly comment about my name spelled wrong (the "i" in Karin often draws comments)... and I remember thinking:  "cute guy"... and went on my way.  Later he persued me and we had a coke at the campus pop shop...   Years later a friend of his recalled that when Rick saw me enter the gymnasium for registration, he had said (jokingly?) "That's the girl I'm going to marry."

We were married in August 1959, for thirteen years... through medical school and internship and residency for Rick, and unergraduate Interior Design Related Arts for me.  Initially we lived in Madison Wisconsin and then moved to Minneapolis,  in a cute old Harvard Street apartment in the heart of U of MN campus.   Many carefree and happy memories there.  We divorced in 1970 around the beginning days of PHS, but remained friends as "The Program" continued to flourish under Rick's and many others' dedicated creative efforts.
